The COVID-19 pandemic left no corner of the global economy untouched — and the oil and gas industry was no exception. With oil prices plummeting and operations disrupted across the world, the sector faced an unprecedented challenge. However, as the world gradually recovers and adjusts to a new normal, certain countries are emerging as key players in the industry’s resurgence. One such country is Azerbaijan — a nation with a rich history in oil production and ambitious plans for the future.
A Legacy of Energy Excellence
Azerbaijan holds a special place in the history of global energy production. As one of the world’s earliest oil-producing nations, it was once responsible for nearly half of the world’s oil output in the early 20th century. Fast forward to today, and Azerbaijan continues to be a vital player on the world stage — not just in oil, but also as an increasingly important exporter of natural gas.
At Orion Group, we have been closely involved in Azerbaijan’s energy story for decades. Since opening our first office in the country in 1996, we’ve had the privilege of supporting countless high-profile projects by providing specialist manpower solutions across engineering, construction, and technical disciplines. Over the past 25 years, our work has helped place thousands of skilled professionals into projects led by some of the biggest names in the sector, including BP and TotalEnergies.
Major New Discoveries Fuel Future Ambitions
Azerbaijan’s energy sector is experiencing a new wave of excitement, thanks to a series of recent discoveries that are poised to reshape the country’s future in oil and gas. One of the key players driving this momentum is Umid Babek Operating Company (UBOC). Founded in 2017, UBOC has quickly become a leading force in Azerbaijan’s offshore exploration and production activities.
UBOC’s primary focus lies in the Umid-Babek block within the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. These offshore fields have proven to be extremely promising. The Umid field alone is estimated to contain around 200 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas and 30 million tonnes of condensate, while the neighbouring Babek structure could hold up to 400 bcm of gas and 80 million tonnes of condensate. These significant reserves represent some of the largest offshore discoveries in the region in recent years.
As global and domestic demand for natural gas continues to rise, the development of these fields will play a crucial role in securing Azerbaijan’s energy future. With the TANAP pipeline now operational, Azerbaijan is well-positioned to export gas to European markets, further strengthening its role as a key energy supplier.
A Collaborative Approach to Long-Term Success
The scale and importance of the Umid-Babek project mean that UBOC’s plans extend far into the future. In the years ahead, they intend to further explore and develop these fields, with proposals for the construction of two new offshore platforms already on the table. Delivering these ambitious projects will require a highly skilled, dedicated workforce — and that’s where Orion Group comes in.
With decades of global recruitment experience and in-depth local knowledge of Azerbaijan’s energy landscape, we are proud to partner with UBOC to help build the talented team they need. At Orion, we believe that people are the heart of every successful project, and we are committed to finding the right professionals to help UBOC realise its vision for the future.
